A visit to Magna provides:
- An exciting experience that challenges pupils to learn about science, technology, engineering and design.
- Opportunities to explore how scientific principles sit alongside art and design.
- An ideal environment for vocational courses looking at leisure and tourism, heritage or regeneration.
The Four Pavilions
The steel industry of South Yorkshire has its roots in Roman times when iron was made from rocks extracted from the EARTH locally. FIRE was used to smelt the iron ore. AIR was used to aid combustion. Later the rivers provided WATER for cooling and for powering machinery and the steel industry grew to dominate the area.
These four themes of AIR, EARTH, FIRE and WATER are the inspiration for the interactive pavilions.
All the pavilions provide hands-on learning, links to steelmaking and consider the impact humans have made.
The Air and Fire pavilions are environments with more relevance to Key Stage 3 and 4.

The History of Steelmaking
Magna is set in the former Templeborough steelworks, a massive building over 1/3rd of a mile long.
- The Big Melt: Watch from the walkway as 'E' furnace is brought back to life using spectacular light and sound effects; recreating the moment when scrap metal is transformed into white-hot molten steel.
- The Face of Steel: Climb the stairs and be drawn into the story of steelmaking on this site. Moving images stretch high into the building.
- Living Steel: Follow the Story of Steel timeline and listen to the tales of life, steel and danger.
- Steel Reveal: Use the interactive spotlights to explore the world of the steelworks through imagery, voices and song.
Outdoors
- Sci-Tek is our large hi-tech playground. The play features develop co-ordination and balance skills, whilst encouraging children to make choices and play interactively.
- Aqua-Tek is our wet play area. Children squirt, mist and drench their way around the features. Signage provides information about water treatment processes.
Adventure Activities
In partnership with the UK Bungee Club pupils can experience the thrills of the Awesome Foursome. You can download all the extra information you need from our useful documents section.
- Ride the Zip Wire.
- Abseil and Powerfan 150ft down to the foundry floor.
- Plunge into the Face of Steel with the world's highest indoor bungee jump.
