Below ground the Earth Pavilion is filled with rugged hands-on games, real life JCBs, hoppers and buckets to race and fill and a quarry face to explode.
Blast it, dig it and rock your way around earth. This earthy experience is guaranteed to get your adrenalin pumping and sort the workers from the shirkers and the foremen from the labourers! This immersive experience is great for kids – they can control machinery, learn about rocks and get a taste for a bit of manual work!
All the exhibits provide hands-on learning, links to steelmaking and consider the impact humans have made.
The Four Pavilions
The steel industry of South Yorkshire has its roots in Roman times when iron was made from rocks extracted from the EARTH locally. FIRE was used to smelt the iron ore. AIR was used to aid combustion. Later the rivers provided WATER for cooling and powering machinery and the steel industry grew to dominate the area.
